Wooded subdivisions of the 1970s and 1980s
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024) counts about 4,880 housing units in the Town of Irmo. About 1,600 were built in the 1970s and about 1,470 in the 1980s. Almost 92 percent are detached single-family houses and about 82 percent are owner-occupied.
Many Irmo houses have two stories, several roof valleys and lots of trees overhead. That combination puts a lot of water and debris into each gutter. We usually suggest 6-inch gutters, 3x4 downspouts and guards on Irmo houses.

Lake Murray Boulevard and the Dutch Fork
Lake Murray Boulevard runs through the middle of Irmo, and the Dutch Fork area stretches north and west toward the lake. Lots here are often hilly and heavily wooded with pines and hardwoods. On a lot that slopes toward the lake, a buried drain line can carry water downhill a long way with little digging depth.
Guard holding back pine needlesGuards are the norm here
Under tall pines, an Irmo gutter without a guard can fill within weeks in the fall. Micro-mesh guards keep the trough open and save you from climbing a two-story ladder. Guards go in on the same day as new gutters, or on existing gutters that are still sound.
Typical Irmo jobs
- Replacing original 5-inch gutters with 6-inch seamless gutters on two-story houses.
- Micro-mesh guards on every run.
- More outlets and 3x4 downspouts where valleys dump into one spot.
- Buried downspout lines on lots that slope toward Lake Murray.
