Common repairs we make
- Sagging runs. Usually old spikes backing out of the fascia. We replace them with screwed hidden hangers and reset the pitch.
- Leaking corners and end caps. Old sealant dries and cracks in summer heat. We clean the joint and reseal it, or replace the corner piece.
- Wrong slope. Water standing in a gutter, or running away from the downspout, means the pitch is off. We rehang the run.
- Storm damage. Limbs from oaks and pines bend gutters and tear downspouts loose. We replace the damaged section in a matching size and color where we can.
- Loose downspouts. New straps, and a new elbow or extension where the old one was crushed.
Fascia comes first
A gutter is only as solid as the board behind it. When water has been running behind a gutter for years, the fascia goes soft and the hangers stop holding. We probe the boards, cut out rotted sections and replace them with primed lumber before rehanging. If the rot reaches the roof decking or rafter tails, we tell you and point you to a roofer or carpenter.
New fascia before the gutter goes back upRepair or replace
Repair usually makes sense when the gutters are seamless aluminum in decent shape and the problem is local. Replacement makes more sense when:
- the gutters are sectional, with leaking joints every ten feet;
- several runs sag and the fascia is soft along much of the house;
- the gutters are undersized for the roof and overflow even when clean;
- you are replacing the roof anyway, so the gutters have to come down.
Angi's gutter installation guide gives gutters a useful life of roughly 20 to 50 years, most toward the shorter end, and says replacement is often the better value once a system passes 20.
