Half-round versus K-style
K-style gutters have a flat back and a decorative front that looks like crown molding. They hold a lot of water for their width and suit most houses built after the 1950s. Half-round gutters are a semicircle hung on brackets or straps. They drain cleanly, because there are no inside corners for debris to settle in, and they suit houses with exposed rafter tails, deep eaves or simple trim. Angi's gutter cost guide notes that some historic neighborhoods require half-round gutters.
Copper, painted aluminum or galvalume
- Copper. Starts bright, turns brown within months and, over many years, can move toward green. It lasts far longer than aluminum and needs copper hangers, fasteners and downspouts, because mixing metals causes corrosion.
- Painted aluminum half-round. The same shape at a fraction of the cost, in white, bronze, black and other colors.
- Galvalume and steel. Heavier than aluminum and paintable. Less common in Columbia; we discuss it if a house had it originally.
Copper half-round on a 1920s houseHistoric districts in Columbia
The City of Columbia has 15 historic district zoning overlays plus more than 180 individual landmarks. Design review runs through preservation staff and the Historic Preservation Design Review Commission. In architectural conservation districts such as Elmwood Park and Wales Garden, the city says generally all exterior work is reviewed and materials are usually required to match the original. If your house is in one, we contact preservation staff before changing the gutter profile or metal, so you know what review the job needs before work is scheduled.
How copper gets installed
Copper half-round is usually built from sections joined with soldered seams instead of being formed in one piece on site. We solder the seams and outlets, set the hangers close enough together to carry copper's weight, and match the downspouts, elbows and straps in copper. Copper rain chains can replace a downspout at a porch or entry where the flow is light.
